What can we learn from heroines in the contemporary tales?

Open Cafe Magenta 17.07.2019
By: Oscar Boldrini

This week Open Cafe, which is held every Wednesday at  9pm in Magenta, was dedicated to the heroines role in cartoon movies and the link that there is with today’s gender roles.

We begun the event showing the trailers of the movies: Moana, Anastasia, Pocahontas, The princess and the frog, Mulan and Rebel. Following the trailers we divided the audience in thematic tables, letting them discuss on questions like the following ones:
– “Which characteristic can we found on the main characters of the movie?”
– “Could you relate the female character with today’s society?”

Every 15 minutes, after energizers, we asked to the participants to change tables, using the usual world cafè approach.

To better fix concepts, we asked to split into two groups, and to recreate a theatre play. The Two groups chose the concept the scenes and the interaction with the rest of the audience. One group recreated the life approach of men and women, pointing out that there is a total comparison in terms of capabilities for both of them. Second group used sarcasm to see how history evolved in terms of gender equality, starting from Adam and Eve till today.

It was very interesting in the final debriefing to understand what sensations participants felt. Majority of them appreciated the open talk modality used during the evening and thanked for the opportunity!

See you next Wednesday for a new and innovative Open Cafè!!
